There is no one way to write a winning scholarship application. If you gathered together all the scholarship entries that have ever won a prize, you would find it difficult to identify what made them the same. Each would offer a distinctive style employed by the author; a unique insight into his or her past, present and future aspirations.

The vast majority of legitimate and reputable scholarships are going to require an essay as part of the application process, which means your student needs to know how to write winning scholarship essays. Otherwise, they may miss out on exciting opportunities for free money to help pay for college, increasing the odds that they’ll need student loans to make ends meet.
That makes the scholarship even more significant to me. If I am given the scholarship, I can further my education without having to worry about my family financial problem, and more important, I can stand a better chance to do what I want, which is to take a step closer to success.
If you have a fantastic interview (score of 5), then it will stand out, as most alumni interviewers don't give out many 5's. I think I've given out about 5-10 over the course of my interviewing career, usually no more than 1 per interview season. But keep in mind that even if you get a 5 on an interview, a majority of whether you get in or not is based upon other factors (see Chronicle article).
